Photos: Recent Sylvia Highlights

OK, so part of the problem with having a cute baby and being married to a talented photographer is that I can't possibly keep up with all the good photos. There's just too many.

So, to stay more or less current, here's a quick sample of more recent photos, since I think my chances of closing the three-month gap between Sylvia's life and the posts on this blog are pretty much nil.

I have to open with this photo of Flying Baby, a favorite game to play with Sylvia:

Yes, she actually leaves my hands; no, not enough for me to accidentally drop her. If she eventually runs away with the circus, you can blame me.

Grandma Pat came to visit in early March and marveled at how much Sylvia had grown in stature and abilities since she had last seen her in January. She found Sylvia a bit heavier in the arms, too!

As a 10-month-old, Sylvia devoted herself to mastering The Point, which she found useful in a multitude of ways. It could mean, "Tell me the name of that thing." It could mean, "Hey, you, pay attention to me." But most often it would mean, "Give me that."

Grandma Pat forgot that it isn't polite to point. Sylvia is such a bad influence.

Always happy to mug for the camera. What has Daddy wrought? You gotta love the meta-photo:

Grandma Pat predicted that Sylvia would start walking by the end of the month. Sylvia decided that Grandma Pat wasn't giving her enough credit. Since Daddy wasn't on the spot when Sylvia took her first step, he found a different way to record the milestone:

With Sylvia embarking on a new adventure as an upright being, Mama decided she was old enough to ride the ponies at the Farmer's Market on Main Street in Santa Monica. So the following Sunday off we went with Grandma Fran, who didn't want to miss the momentousness.

Naturally, that was the week that they decided to bring the petting zoo instead of the ponies. Oh well! There's always a silver lining. This lining was made of wool, apparently:

Sooooo soft, just like Sylvia's blanket. Actually, Sylvia's blanket is wool and alpaca hair, and they even had an alpaca as well. Sylvia did not find the alpaca nearly as exciting as the ducks, however:

Again with the pointing!

They promised us ponies for the following weekend, and we got ponies. Sylvia saddled up on a petite pony named, creatively, Blondie:

At first she cried and clung to Mama, but when we got going, she got into it:

By the end of the ride, Grandma Fran noted that Sylvia was leaning far forward like a jockey! And so the obsession with ponies begins...

Last week, we all flew to Sacramento for a quick visit with Mezhaidig and Great-Grandma Sylvia.

Sylvia says, "Hm, this mustache looks familiar. Have we met?"

Mezhaidig lives across the street from a big, beautiful park. We took advantage of the ample grassy space and the warm weather to give Sylvia a little bare-booty time:

This is her baby-on-a-mission crawl!

She sampled nearly every kind of flora at ground level:

And was distracted from hoovering up plant life only momentarily by Daddy's sunglasses:

Sylvia's understanding and usage of sign language is starting to take off. Here she is practicing "all done" with Mama:

It's always a treat to get the two Sylvias together:

And here we are, four generations of Jorjors:

Dad generously took Sylvia on a walk two afternoons in a row, giving Mama and Daddy an opportunity for some much-needed napping.

Back in L.A., Mama continues to introduce the baby to new foods. Sylvia is a very good eater, both in terms of appetite and adventurousness. Zucchini? More, please. Trinidadan-style dal? I'll have what you're having. As long as she can pick it up herself and one of her parents is eating it, she's game. Here she is sampling sweet Thai tamarind:

Her latest game is to offer Mama or Daddy a piece of her food. More often than not, the proffered piece ends up in her own mouth, but she is learning to be generous and share her food. She will also play this game with food that she is suspicious of, but if her official tasters consume it without ill effects, she'll deign to eat it.

I'll close with this photo of our little angel:

Yes, we do ask ourselves daily, how did we get such a cute baby? We are soooo lucky...

... now if we can just get her to sleep through the night....
